Fifteen years ago the Beijing Platform for Action called for increased women’s participation in conflict resolution and peacekeeping, peace-building and reconstruction. It also called for the protection of women living in situations of armed and other conflicts, displaced women and refugees. Over the last decade, gains have been made at the UN with the Security Council putting in place a stronger normative framework on women’s participation in peace processes, the elimination of sexual violence in armed conflict, and the protection and promotion of women’s human rights.

What comes to your mind when you think the economy? Issues of GDP, employment, inflation, etc., may flush through your mind. Most people’s perception of the economy is in terms of numbers, statistics, and incomes, extra. To understand women and the economy therefore, one needs to look behind the numbers, and gauge the contribution or inputs by women to these numbers, as well as outcomes or benefits for women, again in terms of these numbers.
